Nation Beat ~ 11:00pm

Which nation, and which beat? What makes this group special is that it offers no simple answers. They are rhythm gatherers, harvesting the fruit of 500 years of cultural crossbreeding, which is why the sounds of the northeast of Brazil and the southern United States blend together so seamlessly; NPR’s All Things Considered music writer Banning Eyre calls them “the most original and alluring fusion group I have heard in years.”

The Stick-Ups ~ 10:00pm

The Stick-Ups band came to be as a manifestation of David Luther’s love of rhythm and blues around the time it was turning into rock, a time where saxophone was lead guitar, lyrics were truly dirty, and groove was everything. It is their mission to take all the frenetic, sexy, raunchy, irreverent energy of that music and convey it to you in a manner that impels you to jump from your seat and grind your neighbor, a mission that we take very seriously.

Knights on Earth ~ 8:00pm

“The quartet killed the packed house, playing through most of their new album move slow, life ends. Fronted by the always-amazing guitarist/vocalist Grey Mcmurray, they also had a secret weapon in Mike Williams, whose bass trumpet/flugelhorn gave them a Bell Orchestre-like sheen. But, just in case any of us missed the point, they surprised us late in their set by bringing out a six piece brass ensemble that sounded dangerously close to Gabriel blowing his final horn. Overpowering and thrilling.”
