Acclaimed composer and bandleader Pedro Giraudo returns to the Blue Note with the exciting sounds of his newest formation. This full 17-piece big band, “Expansions,” broadens the powerful emotional impact of his compositions, which have captivated listeners around the world with their passion and energy. With Argentine underpinnings and a hint of South American grooves, they’re subtly suggestive of such composers as Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus, masterfully weaving together pre-composed and improvised elements, seducing you with their rhythms and melodies. Downbeat Magazine’s John Murph describes it as “an opulent listening experience of modern orchestral jazz, brimming with passionate improvisations, contrapuntal melodies, and plush harmonies.” The band’s last two CDs won top honors Latin Jazz Corner’s “Best Of” awards. In this appearance, they will preview some of the new work that will be the centerpieces of their next CD (their 6th).
