Jake Sherman Organ Trio

@ Blue Note Jazz Club – Show @ 6:30PM (Doors @ 6PM)

Called “a quiet force within both the jazz and pop realms,” by a leading popular music website, the versatile organist Jake Sherman is quickly establishing a major reputation as a collaborative musician and soloist. He currently performs with the Ralph Peterson Unity Project and has recently appeared with Warren Wolf, David Fiuczynski, Jamire Williams, Lalah Hathaway, and Bilal, among others.

Jake first began Suzuki piano lessons at age four and before his teens fell in love with ragtime, learning many Scott Joplin classics and composing original rags. At fourteen, Jake discovered jazz and the Hammond organ, teaching himself how to play that instrument by listening to Jimmy Smith and reading Hammond Organ listservs. Soon after this, he began studying under Dr. Lonnie Smith who taught him the finer points of the instrument. His training continued at the New School and at the Berklee School of Music, under whose auspices he did several European tours.

Jake’s fascination with the organ led him to gospel music, and he now plays gospel organ every Sunday at the Greater Antioch Temple in Brooklyn. Jake also has a career as a singer-songwriter. He recently released his first solo album, for which he wrote all the music and lyrics, sang, and laid down all the instrumental tracks. A combination of 70’s pop sensibilities, intricate harmony, and direct but poignant lyrics, it is available at JakeShermanMusic.com

Jake is joined by guitarist Armand Hirsch (Bobby McFerrin, Hank Jones) and drummer Mark Whitfield Jr. (Kenny Garrett), two of the most in demand musicians of the generation. The trio combines their classic organ trio roots with thoughtful arrangements and seemingly telepathic communication.
