ALICIA HALL MORAN, mezzo-soprano, brings diverse influences and passions together in a rich artistic brew.

Ms. Moran starred as “Bess” in the National Tour of The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess, the Tony-winning production from Broadway. She performed the role of Bess on Broadway opposite Norm Lewis as Alternate to actress Audra McDonald. Ms. Moran then went on to star as Bess in the the very successful 9-month tour, earning Moran accolades nation-wide.

Ms. Moran was Artist in the genre-busting 2012 Whitney Biennial along with her husband pianist Jason Moran. For the Biennial Ms. Moran curated the celebrated 26- performance event, BLEED. This mega-offering juxtaposed new collaborations and film with a survey of the Morans’ past collaborations in the musical and visual arts. Read the New York Times review of The Morans’ BLEED @ http://nyti.ms/1GdJBO3.

Ms. Moran performs on film in works by artists Carrie Mae Weems, Simone Leigh, Liz Magic Laser, Joan Jonas, Dorothy Darr, and Bill T. Jones. Co-authoring and improvising vocal music for Bill T. As an artist in residence at the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum Boston, and as commissioned by ArtPublic for Miami Art Basel, Whitney Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and The Kitchen performing arts, Ms. Moran has enjoyed freedom to create her own musical-theatrical works.

Since 2010, Ms. Moran’s critically-acclaimed chamber music soul revue, Alicia Hall Moran + the motown project, has been thrilling audiences at The Highline Ballroom, (Le)Poisson Rouge, University of Pennsylvania, West Chester University, etc. In fact, Ms. Moran was “discovered” for Broadway by The American Repertory Theater while performing the motown project in Cambridge, MA. Ms. Moran’s performances transcend expectation. She upholds the traditions of her great, great uncle Hall Johnson (legendary choral director, composer and preserver of the Negro Spiritual) and her greatest teachers (Shirley Verrett, Adele Addison, Hilda Harris, David Jones & Warren Wilson) while exploring new ways to celebrate the repertoire of the classics and the genius of American Song.
