Charlie Haden passed away in 2014. His musical legacy lives on. After discussion between Haden’s long-time collaborator, arranger and conductor Carla Bley, and Haden’s wife, Ruth Cameron, the two decided to carry on the legacy and complete the final recording that Haden was working on, as well as tour the band. “The music is powerful and beautiful and needs to be performed”, both Cameron and Bley agree. “People need to hear this music.”
Carla Bley conducts the Liberation Music Orchestra, and Steve Swallow holds the bass chair. The lineup for both the new recording (to be released on Impulse next summer) and the tour, which focus heavily on the environment, is the same group that has been touring together for several years.
In 1969, under the banner of Liberation Music Orchestra (MCA/Impulse), Charlie Haden commissioned Carla Bley to arrange for a large cast of illustrious improvisers, including Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri and Roswell Rudd. They made a record that has become a milestone in recorded jazz. In 1970, it won among many awards, including France’s Grand Prix Charles Cros and Japan’s Gold Disc Award from Swing Journal. The group’s self-titled debut is a true milestone of modern music, blending experimental big band jazz with the folk songs of the Spanish Civil War to create a powerfully original work of musical and political activism. Since then, about every ten years, Haden recorded another album with the orchestra, always using Carla Bley as his arranger.
In 2004, Haden recorded his last Liberation Music Orchestra album, “Not In Our Name”. It is with this cast that the
band is now performing and recording.
Haden’s wife and manager and co-producer, Ruth Cameron, continues to present and manage the band.« Back to Events
