Today, Ernie Hammes is launching his seventh album “EVOLUTION” under the American label Vegas Records at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City, which was released in Europe in the Fall of 2017. Luxembourg-born trumpeter/composer/arranger/bandleader Ernie Hammes is accompanied by his own 5-tet composed of Luxembourg musicians David Ascani, saxes; Boris Schmidt, bass; Niels Engel, drums and French-pianist Pierre-Alain Goualch. In addition to his own 5-tet, the album “EVOLUTION” features Philip Catherine on guitar and Wayne Escoffery on tenor-sax. For this CD, Ernie wrote arrangements for a 10-piece string section.
Ernie Hammes studied classical music in Luxembourg as well as in France. In 1987 he joined the Luxembourg Army Concert Band and has been the principal trumpet since 1994.
He started his jazz studies in 1991 with Ack van Rooyen at the Conservatory of The Hague (NL). In 1997, he moved to New York City to study at the Manhattan School of Music with Lew Soloff.
Ernie recorded 7 albums under his own name. He can be heard as a sideman on over 40 recordings in various music genres. His first CD, “FESTIVAL”, recorded in 1997, features classical trumpet works with organ and chamber orchestra. Also in 1997, Ernie received the “DOWNBEAT Student Music Award” for jazz ensemble and big band, while studying at the Manhattan School of Music with Lew Soloff.
Released in 2000, “STEPWISE” shows Ernies’ jazz skills together with his own group and guest musicians Bob Mintzer, and Lew Soloff, producer of the album.
The third CD, “NIGHT LIGHTS”, was recorded live and released in February 2005.
In December 2005, “TRUMPET CLASSICS”, a recording with trumpet, organ and brass quintet was released.
One of the highlights of Ernie’s career includes a roughly 2-year worldwide tour with the late Maynard Ferguson as a member his Big Bop Nouveau Band. Ernie is one of the featured artists on Maynard Ferguson’s last ever-recorded album “MF6, Live at Ronnie’s” released in 2006. He is also featured on the DVD Tribute to Maynard Ferguson along with Eric Myashiro, Andrea Tofanelli, Wayne Bergeron, Carl Fisher and Roger Ingram.
Ernie Hammes was the Luxembourg artist selected to take part in “RETOUR A GOREE”, a musical documentary about jazz and slavery, released in June 2007, in which he plays along African singer Youssou N’Dour.
In 2007, Ernie released the album “FREED & FEIER” which includes a musical suite commissioned by the City of Luxembourg for the fireworks for the Luxembourg National day 2007.
In 2008, he was nominated for the Eurodjango awards in the category “Masters of Jazz”.
“SANFRANCHA” was released in March 2011 and features his band “CUBOP” & many international guest artists. The original compositions are strongly Latin-influenced.
